What Is Priority Thinking?

In the business world we often hear the complaint, "Too many priorities, too little time."  Similarly, many leaders and employees feel their effectiveness is constrained by limited resources.  Yet the problem of priorities is never simply a question of time and/or resource constraints. The challenge of priorities is always a question of thought and will. Our thinking rules over the time and resources we have and how we choose to use them. Our capacity intellectually to “reflect” is a direct function of our willingness to think critically about the choices we make.

This capacity is essential if we are to achieve personal and professional alignment, the preservation of a direct connection among the three types of priorities we practice. Regardless of the specifics of the situation, we have essentially two choices: (1) an action in alignment with our tactical, strategic and core priorities, or (2) an action inconsistent with one or all of these types of priorities. Priority Thinking is all about helping individuals and organizations to recognize and keep their core priorities straight, regardless of the personal or professional context, so that they can focus better on their tactical and strategic priorities.

In short, Priority Thinking is a reality-based approach to improving professional decision-making, building character in employees, and increasing an organization’s capacity for sustained high performance within a coherent ethical framework of thinking.
